The Kindle has it's own proprietary format, which Amazon won't share. Having played around with several ebook readers, I like the B&N Nook. The display is actually brighter and it will display many formats of ebooks. So, you can still buy your ebooks from an independent bookstore w/o giving in to the online uber-giants.
