Watch this to the end. You’ll swear this is a duet…
This is well done.
Ray Charles and Barbra Streisand? Yup, in 1973.
Mahalia Jackson, the greatest gospel singer of all time, very rarely performed anything but hymns and gospel pieces.
This video from a Bing Crosby/Dean Martin special (they comment after she is done) is unusual and just showed up on YouTube. She combines two songs, one of which is definitely secular–”Summertime” from Porgy & Bess.
Below is another clip of Mahalia from the film, “Imitation of Life.”
And at Newport Jazz Festival in 1958
This version of the song surprised me. He was not one of my faves at the time it came out, but listening to him in this YouTube video, I found the song to be moving in some way I can’t quite pin down. It really brings back a certain time, that’s for sure.
OK, I admit it, this is a complete 3-minute time waster and it stretches the category of “Music.” But pretty damn funny. Witness, the Dad Life.
A reader sends this video – a classic. Use your headphones if you’re listening at work. Wanda Jackson can really can belt it.
Nikki Yanofsky wowed the world singing “O Canada” at the Olympics. Now, check this out. And see her website for some astonishing videos. The girl can scat.
This video clip showed up on one of my favorite bookmarks, Jack Bog’s Blog, a Portland writer and Lewis & Clark Law prof. Starting my day with some Al Green (circa 1972) was a good move.
This is a remarkable early video of Dolly Parton; one of my all-time favorites on YouTube. (The close-ups of her face show how young she was — way before all the plastic surgery!)
There are several videos of this amazing young guy on YouTube.
